About - Tim Makins

COUNTRY: England is my country of birth, but I'm rarely ever there. India is my true love - when I'm not there, I'm always missing her. WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE: For bodies I use the Nikon D300 - I have a pair of them. My favourite lenses are the Nikkor 12-24mm and the Nikkor 18-200mm, though I also carry the Nikkor 80-400mm and a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 for special occasions. I love to use both cameras at once, with the first two lenses. Otherwise, I always seem to have the wrong lens on, and hate the time it takes to swap and the chances missed. Where I go, dust is usually a problem, too. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND TRAVELLING FOR PHOTOGRAPHY A YEAR: Since 2006 I've been travelling pretty much continuously, and taking photos pretty much continuously as well. The big problem is finding time in one place to select and process the backlog of photos that builds up! FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHY SUBJECT AND WHY: Luckily for me, as a Travel Photographer, its people, places, and travel. Our planet is a remarkable place, so varied, ever-changing, and enchanting. There's always something fantastic to be seen and photographed. The view around ever corner is different, and each day holds a new surprise for me. MOST PHOTOGRAPHIC COUNTRY: Most definitely India. Whatever you want in the world, you can find it somewhere in India - it has it all. I also love Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and Ethiopia. For a photographer, it really helps if the people you are visiting *like* having their photos taken, so I'd have to include China as a great place to take pictures in as well. THE BEST PHOTO YOU’VE TAKEN: I find this an impossible question to answer. There are plenty of photos that I really like, but each is unique. Do I prefer apples or antelopes? I prefer to listen to other people's opinions. The most important is the one they can't control: when they see a photo for the first time and can't help themselves saying 'WOW'. It makes it all worthwhile. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIG BREAK: Being signed by Lonely Planet Images was very important to me, and has really made my photographic career take off. TIPS FOR BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS: Don't worry about what camera you have - that's not important. Buy the best lens you can afford. Learn as much about composition as you can, then go out and look for the images that enchant you. Start off with a fixed lens, not a zoom, and walk around a lot to see how the image and its components alter. Just a few centimetres one way or the other can make all the difference to the perfect image. TIPS FOR TAKING PHOTOS: Check your camera settings are what you want them to be before you start each day. Always keep your camera handy - you never know when something will happen. Above all else, watch your point of focus - a blurred photo is a lost photo.
