Vaitupu Island, June 1998. Vaitupu viewed from the sea at sunrise while fishing for bonito. From the sea the low-lying islands are easily lost from sight, particularly if bad weather sets in. It is not uncommon for fisherman to be lost at sea.

Vaitupu Island, May 2000. Maaia Moupa harvests toddy from a dwarf coconut palm. Originating in Sri Lanka, dwarf palms save Tuvaluans from the twice-a-day 20m climb it would take to shimmy a regular coconut palm.
