About - Gareth McCormack

Gareth's passion for photography began during a six-month rock climbing trip to Thailand and Australia in the mid 90's. Keen to provide articles for the outdoor press he purchased a second hand SLR and a few rolls of slide film so that he could provide illustration to accompany his writing. Today he still writes feature articles for magazines and has co-authored several titles in Lonely Planet's hiking series, but most of his time is spent behind the camera, shooting travel, landscape and adventure images. In keeping with his love of the high and wild, many of Gareth's favourite trips have been to mountainous regions, including the Nepal Himalaya, the South Island of New Zealand, the US and Canadian Rockies, Patagonia and many trips to the European Alps. As well as illustrating dozens of Lonely Planet books, Gareth's images have appeared in many prestigious publications such as National Geographic Traveller, The New York Times, Time Magazine, and The Economist. They have also been used by commercial clients including Microsoft, Air New Zealand and Tourism Ireland. In 2009 he was commissioned by the Department of the Environment in Ireland to produce mural-sized panoramic images for their new multi-million euro visitors centre in Ballycroy National Park. His first pictorial books will be published in 2010, including a collection of images on County Sligo in Ireland, where he lives with his wife Helen (a Lonely Planet author) and two children, Erin and Geordan.
